Designed to mimic the breast. Its soft, breathable nipple helps to protect against colic. The body of the bottle is also made of silicone – rather than glass or plastic. This makes it squeezable for baby and safe to handle. Another plus: the wide mouth of the Comotomo means it’s easier to clean.
As it turns out, an opaque bottle helps mama stop counting ounces. Which helps her tune into her baby and supports responsive feeding. Why does this matter? Because responsive feeding is linked to healthy weight gain and – later on – to adventurous eating.
MUNCHKIN BABY FOOD FEEDER
There are many ways to get the benefits of baby-led weaning, even if you do purees. A silicone tipped feeder is one smart (and easy) way to put the food in your baby’s hands.
EZPZ TINY CUP
When introducing liquids, skip the sippy cups with a hard spout and go with an open cup or a 360 cup. This one from EZPZ has an interior angle that makes it easier for baby to drink.
EAST FORK TODDLER CUP
Beautiful to look at but hard to break. It’s like East Fork did the impossible. And, now your little can join in on the fun as you sip from the world-famous East Fork mug.
BUMKINS SLEEVED BIB
For babies 6 – 24 months. The waterproof fabric is made from recycled water bottles and it’s machine washable. Free of BPA, PVC, vinyl, phthalates, and lead.
I’m always looking for ways to cut down on how much plastic we use in our home. A silicone baggie like Stasher is perfect for carrying around snacks or fruit (that may leak). For the freezer, I’ve found that the large size is good for storing 1-ounce portions of baby food.
SILICONE BABY FOOD TRAY
Perfect for liver pate. Freeze 1-ounce portions then pop out and store in a freezer-friendly baggie.
CHOO MEE STARTER SPOONS
If you want your wee one to self-feed purees, mashes, or yogurt – you may find that food slips off the spoon. These starter spoons are made of silicone and help to catch food. Note, these will not work for thinner purees or soup.
A kitchen tool that really is as good as everyone says. Whether you’re making bone broth or softening veggies, an Instant Pot is the ultimate time saver and your new BFF.
BIG BERKEY WATER FILTER
For breastfeeding mamas, water keeps you from feeling dehydrated and helps keep milk production up. But many of the chemicals in tap water can end up in breast milk. This water filter is one of the best, removing all traces of chemical pollutants and heavy metals like lead, mercury, and fluoride.
AH BAKEWARE AND STORAGE
In the fridge. In the freezer. In the oven. This little set of glass storage is perfect for getting a little meal prep put of the way and feeling like you’ve *totally* got this.
LODGE MINI CAST IRON
Don’t let the picture fool you. This cast iron pan is SMALL – 6.5 inches wide, to be exact. Perfect for warming up baby’s purees and enriching each bite with a little extra iron.
GUTPRO INFANT POWDER
GutPro is formulated to contain a high amount of Bifidobacteria – a good thing for babies since these strains tend to dominate a healthy baby gut. This probiotic is ideal for breastfed newborns that show signs of tummy troubles as well as littles with allergies or eczema. It’s free of allergens, fillers, and prebiotics.
For newborns with colic, reflux, and eczema – I suggest trying this prebiotic along with GutPro Infant Powder. Click here to find out why.
BODY ECOLOGY CULTURE STARTER
When making fermented foods like sauerkraut, coconut yogurt, or soured cereals – I recommend this starter. A starter culture makes things easier, something any mama can appreciate! It also ensures that only good microbes grow. And it means that you can use less salt when fermenting your veggies, something I recommend for babies since their kidneys are still developing.
Supplements + Superfoods
I talk about spirulina quite a bit because it’s a natural source of iron that is more absorbable than iron drops. It’s also a prebiotic, feeding good gut bacteria. As with everything you offer your baby, quality is priority.
PERFECT COLLAGEN PEPTIDES
If you love smoothies as much as I do and like to share them with your toddler, I recommend this collagen powder. It dissolves easily in cold or warm temperatures. It makes smoothies extra fluffy and warm herbal “lattes” extra frothy.
ANCESTRAL SUPPLEMENTS LIVER
Is all desiccated grass-fed liver the same? If you’re opening the capsules and using them to sprinkle over baby’s food – not so much. Mother’s Best liver pills are literally THE BEST liver pills that I’ve tasted. I imagine this is because the product is super fresh and sells out often. Get it while you can.
MAINE COAST DULSE FLAKES
I’m a big fan of using seaweed flakes in baby’s food. There’s a touch of salt along with a whole suite of trace minerals that your baby needs – including iodine.
US WELLNESS LAMB LIVER
My favorite first food for baby: Liver. It’s full of brain-building nutrients that baby cannot get through breast milk. Yes, really! Click here for more on how to prepare liver for baby.
US WELLNESS MARROW BONES
Roast marrow bones, collect the marrow, and whip it for fluffy bone marrow that is both fatty and rich ine heme iron. Get the full recipe here.
EXTRA VIRGIN COD LIVER OIL
One teaspoon of cod liver oil will meet minimum vitamin D3 requirements and give a solid dose of preformed vitamin A (this is good for your little one’s immune system). Cod liver oil is also full of long-chain omega-3s that your baby’s brain needs for optimal development.
SEEKING HEALTH D3 + K2 DROPS
If you’re going to give vitamin D drops to your baby (or to yourself) make sure you get vitamin K2 with it. Vitamin K2 helps vitamin D do its job. Breastfeeding mamas, breast milk can meet your baby’s daily requirement for vitamin D. Make sure you take around 6400 IU a day if you decide to not supplement baby with vitamin D3.
SEEKING HEALTH PRENATAL
My favorite prenatal for pregnancy and postpartum. It optimizes baby’s development and supports energy levels.
ANCESTRAL SUPPLEMENTS SPLEEN
Spleen is an exceptionally rich source of heme iron, which makes sense since it’s an organ that’s filled with blood. If you’re looking for a natural iron supplement, this is one of my favorites. Be sure to take it with vitamin C.
ORAWELLNESS TOOTH POWDER
On podcasts, through social media, and over email – everywhere – I have told the story of how a daily D3/K2 supplement + OraWellness toothpowder literally reversed worn tooth enamel before my very eyes. If you too have less-than-awesome dental health or if you’re pregnant (did you know the microbes baby is exposed to during pregnancy appear to come from mama’s mouth?) TRY THIS. It’s life-changing.
For all things vaginal, Yin Care. For all things yeasty, itchy, and red – Yin Care. For babies, this includes diaper rash. When it comes to an overgrowth of anything that shouldn’t be there, Chinese Herbs have the ability to quickly correct the problem. Yin Care is a topical wash that you can use within the vaginal canal and on the skin.
I feel like every home needs a set of silicone cups. A tight neck, a sore back, a tension headache. You can place the cups yourself or enlist the help of your partner for immediate relief. Basic how-to: Place the cup where it hurts for 10 minutes. Stick to large muscle groups and avoid joints.
SPRING WIND LINIMENT
After cupping, you may see red or purple cupping marks. This is a good thing! Finish your self-care treatment with a little splash of liniment over the cupped area. Then be sure to cover up. Besides using with cupping, you can also rub Spring Wind liniment over painful joints or place a dab on your temples if you have a headache.
BALTIC AMBER NECKLACE
If tender gums are making your baby extra fussy, you might want to try using an amber necklace. It doesn’t work for every baby, but many mamas (including me!) find that amber soothes sore gums and reduces signs of painful teething.
SAFETY 1ST ELLIE ELEPHANT
Made with silicone and easy to grip, this teether has texture and is just long enough to reach baby’s molar area.
CRADLE CAP BRUSH
While I used the scrubby provided by my hospital, this brush is a serious upgrade because it comes with a comb. To get rid of stubborn cradle cap, apply Lapis Oil or squalane to baby’s head – wait 10 minutes – then use the brush to massage and lift scales off of baby’s scalp.
CALMING LAVENDER WASH
When it comes to clean products that you want to put on your baby, Earth Mama delivers. Use this wash when cradle cap is an ongoing issue since there tends to be a link to the yeast Malassezia and lavender is naturally anti-fungal.
INDIE LEE SQUALANE
Yes, this is for the face (and it’s awesome for that). But as it turns out, squalane is especially good for cradle cap too. This is because it’s a hydrocarbon that’s similar to mineral oil. Except it is 100% natural. And like mineral oil, squalane does not feed the yeast responsible for cradle cap.
SHEA TERRA SQUALANE
Having tried SO MANY brands of squalane, this is another favorite. And it’s an affordable option for folks watching their pennies. Cradle cap, be gone!
SNUGGLE ME ORGANIC COSLEEPER
If you cosleep with your baby, I recommend this cosleeper. It’s the one I used. It safely surrounded my little babe while sleeping and made us both more comfortable during those early newborn months.
